Rowan Mountain, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Gavin Faulkner, a Scot from Edinburgh who had been a professor of mining engineering at Virginia Tech for the previous eight years.
Originally the company offered only desktop publishing services, but soon became a small press with the publication of Our Separate Days by Sharyn McCrumb. Several more books of Appalachian Literature were published over the next five years.
A link was formed with Sisters in Crime, an international organisation that promotes mysteries written by women, and Rowan Mountain handled the publication of their quarterly newsletters, annual Books in Print, and publicity for members.
All these materials needed to be mailed, and so the company developed an expertise in bulk mailing and purchased the high-speed ink-jet addressing equipment necessary for obtaining the best postage rates from the U.S. Postal Service.
Today the majority of our business is preparing and addressing presorted mailings for local and national businesses and non-profits. We still offer design and layout services for postcards, flyers, and business cards...as well as the occasional newsletter and book.
